Current Majors

Basic information

Faculty Advisors in the Department of Kinesiology predominantly support students with academic advising for major requirements. This includes, but is not limited to, overall graduation requirements; internships, research, and field experience; relevant co-curricular opportunities; and career and graduate school mentorship. If you have more general advising questions, especially about General Education (GE) requirements, please see your Professional Academic Advisor or Program- or Population-specific Advisor (e.g., EOP, NCAA Student Athletes, DSS, Transfer, etc.). For more information on SSU’s advising model, please refer to Advising's About page.

The Faculty Advisors in the Kinesiology Department have one of the heaviest advising loads at SSU. The following information is not meant to keep you from seeking an advisor, but rather to make sure we are using our advising time well while also empowering you to take ownership of your academic, personal, and professional goals.

All SSU communication will go to your sonoma.edu email address. The University routinely sends out important information via email, such as Financial Aid and Registration information. Kinesiology majors receive information about advising, registration, graduate and doctoral programs, and job, internship, and volunteer opportunities via their sonoma.edu email address. We strongly encourage students to check their email daily, especially if you are receiving Financial Aid.

All Kinesiology majors are assigned to a Faculty Advisor based on their concentration. Your assigned Faculty Advisor is listed under the “Advisor” box in your MySSU Student Center:

Please note that Faculty Advisors only respond to advising questions from their assigned advisees.

If you do not have a Faculty Advisor assigned or would like to change the Faculty Advisor to whom you are assigned, please email kinesiology@sonoma.edu

To schedule with:

Please be courteous of your advisor’s time and inform them via email if you are unable to attend your scheduled advising appointment.

  • Advising template.
  • Your Academic Requirements Report (ARR). You can access your ARR through your MySSU Student Center page. Please have it available either electronically or printed.
  • Transfer Credit Report if applicable. You can access your report through your MySSU Student Center page. Please have it available either electronically or printed.
  • Current Class Schedule. Please have it available either electronically or printed.
  • Questions or concerns.

We recommend that you meet with your Faculty Advisor every semester to ensure you are on the right path to graduation. Keep in mind that the busiest time to meet with an advisor is during the beginning and end of the semester and right before and during registration. Meeting outside these times will allow for greater flexibility in scheduling.

Faculty Advisors only advise students on major requirements. For general education (GE) and general advising questions, please see your Professional Academic Advisor or Program- or Population-specific Advisor (e.g., EOP, NCAA Student Athletes, DSS, Transfer, etc.).

Your GE pattern is determined by whether you entered SSU as a first-time freshman or transfer student and the date you entered SSU.

Applying for Graduation

  1. You must set up an appointment with your Major Advisor to go over your program and determine when you will be ready to apply. You advisor can review your Academic Requirements Report (ARR) with you and complete an ARR Update Form, if you are substituting a course for one of the major requirements. Current SSU student can apply to graduate online after completing 90 units, of which 15 units must be completed in residence at SSU.
  2. Please view the Registrar’s How Do I Apply Online to Graduate video for details on the online graduation application process.
  3. Once you submit the graduation application, you should receive an email from the Registrar confirming receipt. NOTE: this does not guarantee that you will be able to graduate. You must complete additional steps.
  4. Complete the Stay on Track to Graduate Activity Guide, located on your To Do List in your Student Center. This is required to graduate.
  5. Speak with your advisor(s) to review your ARR and ensure you are on track to graduate. You will not be cleared for graduation if there are any outstanding requirements showing RED on your ARR.
  6. Check your SSU email regularly for graduation updates and reminders.

Commencement

What's the difference between graduation and commencement? Graduation is the actual academic semester, or term, in which you officially and successfully complete all of your graduation requirements. You must apply for the term in which you plan to graduate. Once grades are posted, your record will be evaluated and if all requirements are met, your degree will be awarded.

For information on commencement ceremonies, please go to the commencement website.
